May As Well Do It Right
Whether you are at a party, at a bar, at a picnic, or just at home after a hard day’s work, a nice drink can really put things at ease. Knowing how to make a good drink does not take a doctorate in physics, it just takes an understanding of how the flavors work together and the right tools for the job. Different drink types come with different gear. A martini has a different glass than a draft beer. You can try to drink a martini out of a beer glass, but you are going to miss out on much of the experience.
The most well-known glass type is the shot glass. A shot is a single serving of a hard alcohol. Shot glasses are used to measure out liquor to put into mixed drinks, and to drink single servings at once. At a bar, the common drinks ordered in shot form are whiskey, tequila, and Jagermeister. The drink is slammed down all at once without stopping to take a sip. Shots are usually ordered later on in the night when people have had a few drinks and want to finish out the night. They are a very quick way to make a person quite drunk.
Another well-known glass type is the martini glass. You will instantly recognize this glass if you see one. It has a stem with a base to hold the glass up, and a receptacle that looks like an inverted cone. The rim is wide and the base very narrow. This allows you to put in your favorite garnish, usually a green olive on a toothpick, and still drink around it. The martini glass is also good for a Cosmopolitan or an Old Fashioned, which are the same type of drink with different ingredients.
The beer glass is easy to recognize. Beer glasses come in different shapes and sizes. Most bars will offer regular or large sized glasses. Some will offer mugs, which have a handle to keep your hand from warming the beer. The regular beer glass works best with traditional beers, helping them form a head but keeping them carbonated for as long as possible. The beer glass works best when cold, which is why many people will store them in the freezer until it is time to have a drink. This ensures a frosty beer when you really need it.
Margarita glasses are also easy to recognize. These glasses are wide rimmed with a shallow bowl. They have a stem and a base so that you can grab the drink by the stem to keep from warming it with your hand. The wide rim is perfect for a margarita or other frozen drink. These drinks usually have a garnish of a piece of fruit or a decorative umbrella. These drinks are also usually rimmed with sugar or salt to add flavoring while you are drinking.
If you get the glass right, you are on your way to having a proper drink. You can put a drink in any glass, but does that mean that you should?
