The art of shoe repair or cobbling brings to mind a dedicated craftsman working in his shop, using techniques handed down from his father. Although modern materials and methods are often used today, cobblers, whether they have large operations or little one man shops, still take pride in the quality of the work they do. More than 15 years ago, that’s what impressed young intern Eric Neuner.
Eric was working for a shoe repair business in California and had been there for a few months when he finally made his way out to the factory to see the operation. To this day, he says, the experience filled his senses with sights, sounds and smells of the cobbler’s shop. Little hammers tapping on hardened leather heels, the busy aroma of fresh cut leather and expertly applied shoe polish, and the seemingly endless activity of a busy shoe repair factory.
Many people can recall a single moment in their life when they suddenly knew their direction in life. Some call it the “a-ha moment.” Eric says that standing there in the factory and seeing and sensing the pride of the craftsmen and the skills they displayed was that moment for him. Fifteen years later, that young intern has become the president of NuShoe, a large shoe renewal and repair company headquartered in San Diego, California.
Eric has helped differentiate his company from others in the business, starting with the company’s stated goal “to provide the highest quality craftsmanship and best customer service possible every day, with every customer, and with every pair of shoes.” Eric has pioneered other innovations in the shoe repair business as well. Think about the shoe repair business for a moment. If you had a favorite, expensive pair of shoes or workboots that you wanted to have repaired, where would you go? The local shoe store? Not likely.
Eric and NuShoe look toward modern technologies and methods of reaching customers. They originally had a network of shoe repair customer service centers in area malls reaching out to customers in various communities. They soon saw a better way. The internet reaches millions more customers than any number of retail outlets could ever hope to reach. NuShoe decided to use the internet to educate customers and remind them that old world craftsmanship and pride in a a job well done is alive and well right here in the USA. The evidence is in the care that NuShoe shows in every repair and renewal they do.
They also make the entire process easy for the customer. By filling out a simple form on the NuShoe website, customers will receive a prepaid mailing bag in which to send their shoes to the NuShoe factory. Within a short 21 days, those same shoes will arrive back in the customer’s mailbox, as good as new, or better. NuShoe uses original factory quality materials and methods to rebuild the shoe. The replace the soles and even the upper portion of the shoe until it is literally new again.
Eric Neuner and NuShoe set themselves apart with a welcome blend of differentiated customer service and old fashioned pride in a job well done.
